Motor Trend magazine named the 69 Plymouth Roadrunner, car of the year! Road Runner sales almost doubled after being given that title. Numbers were followed closely by the second place leader in sales the Chevy Chevelle SS-396. Mopar was ahead of the Pontiac GTO, which dropped to third place in this market area.
Part of the success and popularity was credited to the engines available. At around 300 hp, the 383 engine remained the standard power plant. A 440 4-barrel upgrade supplied around 350 hp. A modified version coined “Magnum” was reported to have around 375 hp. The more sought after setup was a 440 CID engine with three two-barrel carburetors, known as the “440 Six Pack”. This package was added to the lineup at mid-year to qualify the engine for the Super Stock drag racing class.
This model of Roadrunner had a Code M as the fifth character in the VIN and was also known as the A12 model. Its 440 engine produced 390 hp and 490 lb·ft of torque at 3200 rpm, very similar numbers to the Hemi and at a lower engine speed. This meant the cheaper 440 6bbl was nearly as fast as the 426 Hemi, at least up to highway speeds. The Six Pack option, along with the 383 and the fast Hemi helped drive Plymouth to the top of the drag strip echelon.
